Our Bred Free Range Pork provider is Otway Pork. The animals are bred on farms in the Otway Ranges, located in South Western Victoria. In relation to the conditions in which the animals are raised, the parent pigs are free to roam on open pastures and shelter in purpose built huts as a means of protection from the elements. The mother sow is relocated to a separate paddock prior to birthing for her own protection and the protection of her litter. Sows have access to insulated, straw based huts prior to and immediately after birth. The piglets remain in the straw based huts with the sow until they are weaned at approximately four weeks of age, however they have access to open paddocks to forage and socialise. With respect to diet, the animals are fed a grain based feed free of added hormones and antibiotics.
Otway Pork is accredited by the RSPCA as the pigs are accorded the 5 Freedoms:
1. Freedom from Hunger and Thirst
2. Freedom from Discomfort
3. Freedom from Pain, Injury and Disease
4. Freedom to Express Normal Behaviour
5. Freedom from Fear and Distress
Otway Pork is subject to regular inspections to ensure continued adherence to the RSPCA standards.
